Weaving Spitalfields: Stephen Walters x Central Saint Martins Collaboration

Students of Central Saint Martins London gather in the middle of a table surrounded by their moodboards.

We were delighted to collaborate with the Year 2 weave students at Central Saint Martins on a project inspired by Spitalfields. Drawing on the area’s rich history, architecture and food culture, the students brought a wide range of creative perspectives to the brief.

Over eight weeks, they were given the freedom to interpret the project in their own way, resulting in a vibrant and diverse body of work. The quality was incredibly high, with beautifully woven pieces that combined strong ideas, thoughtful research and clear product direction.

We’d like to recognise a few students whose work particularly stood out.

Chia, impressed us with her strong concept and engaging visual storytelling, alongside a confident and creative jacquard.
Central Saint Martins Student Andrea's Moodboard
Andrea, demonstrated an innovative approach, supported by excellent research and a clear understanding of colour and end use.

Joey, our winning student, spent a full day with us at the mill. His work showed a sophisticated use of colour and carefully selected swatches, brought together in a refined and well-executed collection. The inclusion of a noble fibre within his jacquard and a cohesive colour story gave his work a real sense of balance and luxury.

A collage of images, one a student looking at fabrics hanging on a rail, another moodboard pages scattered on a table, then close ups of a check design

It was a pleasure to host Joey at the mill, giving him an opportunity to see first-hand his ideas translate into production made it a valuable and inspiring experience.

We would like to thank all the students and tutors involved in the project.
